While on foot patrol with his men, Travis stepped on an IED (Improvised Explosive Device). The resulting explosion was devastating and left Travis severely wounded. He lost both legs at the knee, his right arm above the elbow and his left arm below the elbow. Three of Travis' men were also injured in the blast, and in the aftermath, his first thoughts were of their safety instead of his own.

January 9th 2012 will mark the 151st anniversary of what some have said were the real opening shots of the American Civil War. It was on this day that the merchant ship Star of the West sailed into Charleston Harbor with the intent of delivering Federal troops and supplies to Fort Sumter. But before reaching her destination, the Star of the West attracted a volley of cannon fire from nearby South Carolinian forces at Morris Island and Fort Moultrie. The ship retreated with minor damage, and returned to New York without accomplishing her mission.
