By a margin of 15-3, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, on Tuesday, voted for legislation that would allow the United States to overtly supply arms to Syrian rebel forces. Up until now, we have been led to believe that our government has provided only non-lethal aid in the two year old conflict. And speaking of non-lethal aid, it was just last month that Secretary of State Kerry said the U.S. was prepared to increase the amount of the aforementioned assistance to $250M!

Combat Outpost (COP) Keating is located in the wilderness of the Hindu Kush Mountains. More specifically, it can be found in the Kamdesh District, Nuristan Province of Afghanistan. Built by U.S. Army forces in the summer of 2006, COP Keating began life as a Provisional Reconstruction Team base (PRT).

The use of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) is not a new phenomenon. These destructive implements antedate the U.S. wars in Afghanistan and Iraq by hundreds of years. Terrorists have long relied on IEDs to further their criminal activities, perpetuate fear and kill those who do not share their ideology. The fuse to the War on Terror was lit when IEDs were flown into the Twin Towers, the Pentagon and a field in Shanksville PA, killing thousands of innocent Americans. And currently in Afghanistan, IEDs kill more U.S. troops than any other weapon.

On October 14th, President Obama sent a letter to Congress advising them of his intent to deploy a “small number of combat equipped US forces” to central Africa. The letter went on to say that “These forces will act as advisors to partner forces that have the goal of removing from the battlefield Joseph Kony and other senior leadership of the LRA”.
