Iwo Jima, a piece of Japanese home soil in the Pacific, is a volcanic island located approximately 650 miles south of Tokyo. The island is only about 8 square miles in total area. The most definitive feature on the island is a 550' volcanic cone, known as Mount Suribachi, located at its southern tip. During WWII, the Japanese had 2 functioning air fields, along with an array of Zero fighters on Iwo Jima. The island was also meant to function as an early warning mechanism for the mainland, in the event of a U.S. attack.
