The Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) San Diego CA is one of the show places of the Marine Corps. The facility is located adjacent to the San Diego International Airport (Lindbergh Field), and occupies approximately 400 acres. The Marine Corps Base at San Diego was originally established by Major General Joseph H. Pendleton in July of 1914. He recognized the strategic value of the harbor and surrounding areas as a place where Marines could be trained and deployed throughout the Pacific when needed.

On August 26th, my wife and I attended our grandson's graduation from Army basic training, at Fort Sill Oklahoma. He was among more than 200 new soldiers that were recognized that day. He turned 18 in April of this year. After some additional training, he will be assigned to a SAM (surface to air missile) crew. The ceremony was quite moving and patriotic. The auditorium was decorated with American flags and banners. A video was shown depicting portions of the recruit training, and was accompanied by lively military music. Afterward, the graduates sang “The Caisson Song”. I was very impressed with the entire event.
