The Medal Of Honor
The Medal of Honor is the highest military award presented by the United States for heroism in combat. The Medal of Honor is, of course, unique in many ways. It was first approved by President Lincoln during the Civil War. It was later made a permanent decoration by Congress in 1863. During the ensuing 148 years, the Medal of Honor has been earned on more than 3,400 occasions. But even more amazing, 19 men have received 2 Medals of Honor!
The incredible bravery, devotion to duty, patriotism and willingness to sacrifice displayed by our Military is truly second to none. The Medal of Honor must be approved by the President, and is presented in the name of the Congress of the United States. Thus it is sometimes referred to as the Congressional Medal of Honor.
Since the beginning of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, 10 more names of US service men have been added to the list of Medal of Honor recipients. Tragically, 7 of the 10 men on this list received the award posthumously. You can read accounts of their actions here. They are the best America has to offer. Additional info on these extraordinary men can be found here. No other country on earth has a military as well trained, motivated and prepared to go in harm's way, as that of the United States of America! We owe them our unwavering support for the work they do and the sacrifices they make. They provide us the freedom that makes us the envy of every other nation in existence today. Thank you to all who are currently serving or have served in the past.
